The Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture has transferred their extensive bonsai collection to the Golden State Bonsai Federation (GSBF) for placement at the Shinzen Friendship Garden in Woodward Park, Fresno.
Currently, the Golden State Bonsai Federation maintains a collection in northern California at The Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt and one in southern California at the The GSBF Collection at The Huntington. Over 100 trees will be kept in the newly built Clark Bonsai Collection display garden at Shinzen.
Housing this unique and valuable collection provides greater access to the residents of California to enjoy the art of bonsai. Shinzen’s host site within its beautiful Japanese garden will build a new display space so as to reflect the “hide and reveal” experience so valued and enjoyed at the Clark Center. Bob Hilvers, long time curator at the Clark Center will continue in that role at Shinzen.
Shinzen is grateful for the partnerships and collaborations that this project reflects with the Clark Center, the Golden State Bonsai Federation and the City of Fresno. We also celebrate the potential for the collection to provide a learning laboratory for those interested in the art of bonsai by extending our partnerships with California State University Fresno, Fresno City College, and the Fresno Bonsai Society as well as bonsai clubs throughout the Central Valley.
